PSA: making carbon emissions above a certain baseline an economic liability, and carbon storage and removal an asset is both radical and important and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise no matter their stated reasoning.
change my mind:
it’s about the water cycle
high CO2 ppm is just a canary that 200 years of emissions created
10,000 years of human induced land use change is the main issue
this altered the water cycle and simultaneously screwed the carbon cycle
One of the most powerful things I ever heard about how to understand biodiversity was one man who said the first thing you do is you walk out in a field and you close your eyes, and you count to 60, and you listen to every single bird you hear over that 60 second period. Because if you have birds, you have insects, and if you have insects, you have plants on the ground...bird counts are one of the most fundamental ways to express biodiversity.
